Developing the Future: Supply Chain and Workforce Strategies

In Episode 5 of Ed Talks, Edward Zimmermann, CMP’s Subject Matter Expert in Energy Storage, explores two critical components driving success in the energy storage industry: Supply Chain Development and Workforce Development. As the industry rapidly evolves, manufacturers and OEMs must adapt to meet new challenges and seize emerging opportunities.

The episode highlights lessons from CMP’s Supplier Symposium, where more than 100 of its top suppliers gathered to discuss industry challenges and growth opportunities. The focus was on building resilience in the supply chain and developing a strong workforce—key pillars for long-term success.

Supply Chain Development: More Than Just Catalog Solutions

Strong supplier partnerships are essential for success in energy storage. At the symposium, several key themes emerged:

1. Be Solutions-Focused
The industry isn’t looking for off-the-shelf solutions. Innovation and fresh ideas give manufacturers a competitive edge in both design and production. Suppliers must bring game-changing technologies that can elevate products and improve processes.

2. Prioritize Clear Communication
Miscommunication can delay projects and cause costly mistakes. Maintaining clarity on specifications, strategies, and demand profiles is essential for efficiency. Clear communication between manufacturers and suppliers ensures smoother operations and fewer delays.

3. Choose Strategic Partners
Suppliers are an extension of the business, and their performance reflects on the manufacturer. OEMs increasingly want visibility into a company’s supply chain to ensure quality and compliance. Selecting reliable partners with proven expertise and a strong track record is critical.

Workforce Development: Building the Next Generation of Talent

Supply chain strength is only one side of the equation; having the right talent in place is just as crucial. CMP focuses on community engagement and partnerships with local institutions to attract and develop skilled professionals at both its Chateauguay, QC headquarters and Binghamton, NY facility.

Key initiatives include:

  • Partnering with Local Chambers of Commerce to understand demographic trends and develop strategic recruitment plans.
  • Collaborating with Trade Schools and Universities, including SUNY Binghamton, to connect with future talent in electrical and mechanical engineering. Offering internships and hands-on experiences helps inspire students to pursue careers in energy storage and stay in their communities.
  • Prioritizing Onboarding and Culture Integration, ensuring new employees feel connected to the company’s mission and understand how their role contributes to overall success.

Building a Strong Foundation for the Future

Supply chains and workforce strategies are no longer just operational necessities—they are competitive advantages. Companies that align their resources, build strong partnerships, and invest in local talent will lead the way in the evolving energy storage sector. By focusing on these key areas, CMP continues to push boundaries and prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
