Energy Storage on the Rise: Insights from Ed Talks with John Cerveny

The energy storage sector is rapidly expanding, fueled by increased demand and ambitious targets for deployment. In a recent Ed Talks episode, John Cerveny, Senior Director and Program Manager at NENY Supply Chain, joined Edward Zimmermann, CMP’s Subject Matter Expert in Energy Storage, to discuss how New York State is setting the pace with innovative programs and aggressive goals.

The Growth of Energy Storage

While electric vehicle (EV) adoption has seen steady growth, energy storage—often an unsung hero—has become a critical component of the energy transition. Stationary and mobile storage systems are increasingly essential for grid stability and renewable energy integration.

In New York State, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) set a bold initial goal of deploying 3 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030. However, in a recent update, that target was doubled to6 gigawatts, creating significant opportunities for deployment.

As John explains, to meet this ambitious goal, New York needs to deploy around 3 megawatts of storage per day between now and 2030.This has prompted organizations like NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) to develop new incentive programs across various sectors:

  • Bulk Storage (5 MW and larger)
  • Retail Storage (up to 5 MW)
  • Residential Systems for homeowners seeking to reduce power costs

Innovative Incentive Structures

One of the key programs John highlights is the Index Storage Credit, which uses a strike price mechanism to stabilize market performance and provide economic certainty for operators. When the market price falls below the strike price, the difference is paid to the operator; when it rises above, the operator pays back the difference. This structure ensures systems are deployed where they are most needed while encouraging optimal grid performance.

A Growing Network of Suppliers and Opportunities

Edward Zimmermann notes that beyond energy storage deployment, the broader focus is on building a sustainable ecosystem for businesses in New York. Supplier development programs have been instrumental in supporting companies like CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions and others across the state. These programs help businesses identify new opportunities, connect with suppliers, and diversify their capabilities across multiple sectors.

“What do you need as an enterprise in the state of New York to be successful in your domain? Are there other domains you could approach that you may not have considered?” Edward asks. These questions drive the supplier network's success and open new doors for organizations looking to expand.

Looking Ahead

The future of energy storage is bright, with states like New York leading the charge. With aggressive deployment goals, incentive programs, and a growing supplier network, the stage is set for continued growth and innovation in the industry. CMP, with Edward Zimmermann and its team of experts, remains committed to supporting this evolving market and playing a key role in its expansion.
