Chateauguay, Quebec - The Visual Knowledge System (“VKS”) allows companies to rapidly create electronic or hard copy Visual Instruction Files – in short, a file or document that illustrates a process through the combination of digital images and text. Typically images are easier to understand, provide better detail than just written text and drawings and can show realistically how a process or job is performed.
The system consists of a creation tool to create the Visual Instruction Files (VIF) as well as Viewer stations that display the files on the shop floor, right where operators work. The Viewer stations have touch screens that allow operators to quickly and easily access and browse through files. The Viewers are mobile allowing the flexibility of moving them to where they are needed the most. The Viewers are also wireless enabled, facilitating access to the files anywhere on the shop floor.

In 2006, CMP’s Quebec facility tested the system out with a few Viewer stations on the shop floor. “We immediately saw the benefits of using Visual Instruction Files,” said Ian Tilley, Director of SD & ED at CMP. “Productivity increased overall, quality, training time and workforce flexibility significantly improved. One of the major benefits is the systems ease of use. We had looked at other Visual Aid systems in the past, but they typically had a slow learning curve, were heavy to maintain and required a lot of effort to get up and running. The VKS system allowed us to be up and running and creating clean, effective visuals in no time at all. This coupled with the Viewers that are designed specifically with an operator’s needs in mind sold us on this flexible, yet powerful tool.”
The initial plan is to deploy an addition of 50 stations across CMP’s multiple facilities over the next year and to schedule departmental introduction and training meetings to ensure a smooth integration into day-to-day operations.
